BOCA RATON, Fla., Aug. 31, 2016 -- Three Florida parents on a mission to make homework fun have launched a tabletop card game that’s a blast, and it’s coming to Kickstarter in September.
Race to Space combines the challenge of a trivia quiz with the excitement of a fast-paced strategic card game. Better yet, parents and teachers can queue up whatever questions may be on their children’s next test.
As they answer questions, kids must avoid treacherous sabotages, complete mission quests, and navigate through mini-games like rock-paper-scissors and dice challenges. Math facts, vocabulary lists, spelling tests, geography questions and more fly at them during the epic battle of wits. Sets cleverly include blank cards, allowing games to be customized. Grade-level expansion sets are available, too.
South Florida parents Karen Smith of Boca Raton, and Jordan Ramey and Shari McDuffie of Sarasota intentionally kept Race to Space low-tech, recognizing that too much screen time leads to irritable, distracted kids. Tabletop game-playing, on the other hand—the kind with dice, cards and strategy, is a different story. Study after study has shown such games can boost vocabulary and numeric literacy. Playing together also boosts connectedness to family and friends. No matter who plays, everyone wins!
Perhaps that’s why off-screen gaming is trending. According to digitaltrends.com, board games have proven to be the most popular category on some crowdfunding sites, especially Kickstarter, raising around $265 million total.
“For several years now, we have been seeing a secular trend in gaming away from games played on a screen and toward tabletop games played in person with other players,” Milton Griepp, CEO and founder of ICv2 told the Boston Globe recently.
