Capcom has once again struck gold with their remake of “Resident Evil 2” as both players and critics are praising the game for its freshness and classic horror atmosphere. While the characters are somewhat lacking in substance, the game makes up for it on graphics, gameplay, and the constant dread it delivers.
Indeed, as players navigate through the dim and dilapidated building of Raccoon City’s police station, one could not help but feel the claustrophobia setting in due to the low ceiling and narrow walls. Add the fact that there’s certainly an undead on the other end of the hallway and “Resident Evil 2” is a perfect game for those seeking harrowing thrills, IGN reported.
The constant threat of zombies is also amplified by limited ammo and health packs, forcing players to conserve their resources and be accurate with every bullet they fired. Of course, with fear and panic gripping the imagination of said gamers, each shot isn’t necessarily connecting. This is despite the fact that zombies are literally two steps away from the character they’re playing. Puzzles and hidden objectives are also factors of “Resident Evil 2” that helps immerse players into the game’s world – silly though some may be. Writer and critic Alessandro Fillari are among those that have provided the reimagining with gleaming reviews.
“Resident Evil 2 is not only a stellar remake of the original, but it's also simply a strong horror game that delivers anxiety-inducing and grotesque situations, topping some of the series' finest entries. But above all, the remake is an impressive game for the fact that it goes all-in on the pure survival horror experience, confidently embracing its horrifying tone and rarely letting up until the story's conclusion,” Fillari said.
As for the sales performance of “Resident Evil 2,” Gamespot reported that the remake managed to ship four million copies and that figure is still rising. With the reimagining’s success, fans are now asking if Capcom will give the same treatment to “Resident Evil 3: Nemesis. So far, however, the studio has yet to make an announcement but it’s safe to assume they’ve at least broached the topic since their latest take on this franchise turned out to be quite the hit.
