As a TV series, “The Walking Dead” arguably comes closest to rivaling “Game of Thrones” when it comes to killing off beloved characters. The gruesome murder of Glenn Rhee (Steven Yeun) was among the most harrowing examples, but fans of the series might be in for a lot more. According to supposedly leaked details, the show’s lead, Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln), will die in ‘The Walking Dead’ season 9, episode 5.
This latest rumor comes from a post on Reddit by a user named LastGreene. The details apparently came from a fan site called The Spoiling Dead Fans and include the exact episode when Rick dies.
"We can now confirm that Rick Grimes' story comes to an end in episode 5,” the post reads. “He DOES die in that episode. Looking at all the recent photo evidence of the large herd and the leaked script page that was partially deciphered, we think it is safe to say that the herd plays a part in Rick's death.
“Once more detailed information becomes available, we will update. Let the wailing and rending of garments commence.”
As Express notes, if the details of this leak are true, the upcoming season will be the zombie slayer’s last. This mirrors recent unconfirmed reports that ‘The Walking Dead’ season 9 will also be Andrew Lincoln’s last in the series.
Then again, this was a long time coming, and Lincoln himself expected it for years. He even had a special request for his potential death, Comicbook reports.
The actor had apparently asked to be killed by a kid in a 2014 interview with EW. He also asked if the end credits will play the song “Hurt” as performed by Johnny Cash. In a recent interview with the Comicbook, Lincoln expressed his thoughts on the fate of his character.
“There's part of me that really wants to complete something," Lincoln told the publication. "How long that takes? I don't know but certainly, I really think the fans and my character deserve an endpoint as some time in the future."
Until ‘The Walking Dead’ season 9 arrives, rumors about the death of Rick Grimes will remain officially unconfirmed. However, considering Andrew Lincoln’s thoughts on the matter and the ending of season 8, such an eventuality would not be surprising.
