Russia-Turkey tensions heightens to new cold war peak

Turkish government has issued its most serious threat ever to the likes of the supporters of Syrian government that include supporters from Iran, Kurdish Militia and Russia.

Ahmet Davutoglu, Turkish prime Minister has issued a threat that Kurdish Militia, who are supported by both Russia and United States for their fight against Islamic State that they would face harshest actions, if they try to recapture town near Turkish border. Azaz is the town, Turkish government was referring to. While accusing YPG as instruments of Russia in Syria, he said turkey would attack Menagh air base, north of Aleppo, if Syrian Kurds do not withdraw from there.

Russian intervention in Syria, last September has changed the balance of power in the region. Government forces are on its way to retake Aleppo, Syria's largest city before the war. Last Friday, Russia and world powers have agreed to some sort of peace deal but that doesn't come in effect till this weekend.

Turkey has accused Russia for deliberately violating its air space several times, however refrained from taking actions after downing a Russian jet in November. That incident saw escalation of tensions in the region.

Recent commentaries from Russian government suggests, the government forces and its supporters with the help of Russian bombardment will be not only retaking Aleppo but will definitely try to seal the border with Turkey. Now if turkey sticks to its threat, which have started bombing Kurdish positions, there could be serious escalations over the coming weeks.
