Russian State Duma To Hold Digital Currency Conference In June

An international conference on digital currency will be held in the State Duma of the Russian Federation on June 2, 2016. The conference, entitled "Electronic currency in the light of current legal and economic challenges", is expected to discuss bitcoin and other digital currencies.

Forklog reported that the official letter about the event indicated the Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee for Security and Anti-Corruption, Andrey Lugovoy as a signatory.

Lugovoy has been quite supportive of the cryptocurrency ecosystem. Last month, he said that instead of prohibition, it is necessary to assess the prospects and risks of digital currencies, as well as to develop a legal framework to work with them.

The event will bring together leading Russian and foreign scientists, leaders of Duma factions, deputies of the State Duma, members of the Public Chamber of the Russian Federation, representatives of government agencies, representatives of business and experts. Forklog noted that the event is at the early stage of training, and so far no international experts or representatives of the core business is not in the list of invitees.

"The conference will focus on a wide range of issues related to the legal and economic aspects of the turnover of electronic currency, the legal framework regulating modern payment tools, economic benefits and criminological risks of using e-currency issues technical support of its turnover, international and foreign practice of using modern payment instruments and prospects development of electronic currencies in Russia”, according to loosely translated version of the letter reported by Forklog.

The news about this conference comes at a time when the Russian government has been making efforts to prohibit the circulation of bitcoin in the country. Recently it was reported that the draft law that seeks to ban circulation of digital currencies such as bitcoin in Russia will enter the country’s legislative assembly Duma later than expected. Deputy Finance Minister Alexei Moiseev explained the reason for delay citing various additions and corrections being made to what was regarded as the final version of the draft, after several comments and suggestions were received from reviewers.
