Netflix confirmed that the Indian thriller series “Sacred Games” season 2 is getting a 2019 release date. At the same time, a new teaser also revealed the show has added new cast members.
The TV series is based on the same title novel by author Vikram Chandra published in 2006. The renewal of “Sacred Games” season 2 is important because it is an indication that the first-ever Indian-language Netflix original show primarily filmed in the country and featuring Bollywood actors had a successful worldwide release.
The streaming services company is still secretive about the “Sacred Games” season 2 release date, but the latest teaser assured fans that it will arrive in 2019. It is not unusual for Netflix to put out sequels around the same date as its first installments. Also, filming for the second season wrapped up in February that was the same time frame as season 1’s production, per Digital Spy. “Sacred Games” season 2 is then very likely coming out in July again.
Earlier this week, Netflix dropped a Cast Reveal trailer of “Sacred Games” season 2 that confirmed main characters from the first eight episodes are coming back. It also unveiled powerhouse additions to the cast including actors Kalki Koechlin and Ranvir Shorey. They are joining Saif Ali Khan who plays police officer Sartaj Singh and Nawazuddin Siddiqui as crime boss Ganesh Gaitonde.
Koechlin and Shorey are playing the new characters Batya Abelman and Shahid Khan, respectively, in “Sacred Games” season 2. Details about these roles and whose side they are going to be affiliated with are still under wraps. But the actors have since expressed excitement in joining the series.
“The digital platform is so empowering and working on this audience-favorite show has been an absolute delight,” Shorey said (via The Hindu). “My character in ‘Sacred Games 2,’ Shahid Khan, is a complete departure from any of the roles I’ve played before, and I’m looking forward to fans across the world bingeing on the new season.” Shorey is known for his roles in critically-acclaimed comedy films in Bollywood such as “Mithya” and “Bheja Fry.”
