Samsung Electronics and Deutsche Telekom AG, Germany's telecom giant, signed a deal to develop and establish an eco-friendly 5G mobile phone. It is another strategic team up for sustainability, and the agreement was reportedly sealed by the two parties during the Mobile World Congress 2021.
The new sustainable smartphones
As per Yonhap News Agency, the deal between Samsung Electronics and Deutsche Telekom will allow them to work together to come up with a "green smartphone" that is not just environmentally friendly but easy to repair as well. This type of phone is expected to hit the market by the end of 2022.
It was added that both companies also agreed to work on expanding the utilization periods of the phones. To kickstart this, they will be launching an expanded recycling program for smartphone units in October.
Based on the report, Samsung already implemented this kind of program that operates with Deutsche Telekom in Poland and Germany. Under the program, they bought used phones then refurbished them for reselling.
"Samsung and Deutsche Telekom believe innovation and sustainability are not mutually exclusive, and together, we will foster more sustainable business models for the entire ICT industry," Samsung’s marketing head for mobile communication business, Stephanie Choi, said.
Partnership to boost green initiatives
Samsung Electronics and Deutsche Telekom further explained that their strategic partnership is mainly for boosting green initiatives. Telecom Lead mentioned that the firms will be releasing green mobile phones for the mass market, and of course, the units will feature the 5G technology.
5G is a feature that should not be underestimated because it will make smartphones faster. According to Samsung, the most noticeable difference between 5G phones and those that have the earlier generation of cellular technology is the significant decrease in latency or how fast the signals are sent to and from the devices.
It was said that 3G's latency response rate was 100 milliseconds while 4G's is 50 milliseconds, and finally, 5G will be just 1 ms. Thus, the new green phones that Samsung and Deutsche Telekom are releasing will really be worth every penny.
