Samsung launched the Galaxy A35 and A55 with cutting-edge features. A55 boasts a mid-range Exynos chip, 12GB RAM, and Gorilla Glass Victus+. However, questions arise about software support longevity compared to the flagship S24.
Samsung Galaxy A55 Breaks Mid-Range Mold with First-Ever Exynos Chip and 12GB RAM, Software Updates Raise Questions
Among the upgrades is Samsung's first mid-range Exynos chip with an AMD RDNA graphics architecture GPU, similar to the Exynos 2200 and Exynos 2400 that power Samsung's flagship Galaxy S22 and Galaxy S24 smartphones. The A55 is also the first mid-range phone from the Korean giant to include 12GB of RAM, which is not available on the Galaxy S24.
On the software front, the Galaxy A55 and Galaxy A35 are distinguished by running version 6.1 of One UI out of the box (with Android 14 as the foundation), just like the Galaxy S24 lineup. But will they receive the same solid software support as Samsung's 2024 flagship?
The answer is no; they will not. As of March 2024, the Galaxy S24, S24+, and S24 Ultra remain the only smartphones eligible for seven-year OS and security updates, per SamMobile. The A55 and A35 will receive four major operating system upgrades and five years of security updates, just like their predecessors.
Four major OS upgrades are still more than what other manufacturers' mid-range phones receive, so we will not compare them to Samsung's newest mid-range. However, the company could have considered adding a fifth major OS upgrade, at least for the Galaxy A55.
While the A35 and A55 currently lack the AI features that set the Galaxy S24 lineup apart, there's a possibility that Samsung could enhance these handsets with AI capabilities through a future software update. This potential development could significantly improve the user experience of these devices.
Elegance Meets Durability: Samsung Galaxy A35 and A55 Introduce Gorilla Glass Victus+ and Enhanced Water-Resistance for Premium Design and Sturdy Build
The Samsung Galaxy A35 and A55 are not just about performance; they also boast a more premium design. Both phones feature glass on the front and back, with the A55 even sporting a sleek metal frame. And the rumors were true: Samsung has indeed incorporated Gorilla Glass Victus+ into its new mid-range phones, adding a touch of elegance to their robust build.
Samsung claims that the Galaxy A35+ has a screen made of Gorilla Glass Victus+ but does not say what is used on the back. The company claims that the A55 "is made of Corning Gorilla Glass Victus+," implying that the stronger glass is on both sides of the device. Even if both phones only feature Victus+ on the front, it's a significant and welcome upgrade.
Unlike previous versions of Gorilla Glass, which focused on either scratch resistance or drop protection, the new Gorilla Glass Victus+ was designed to enhance both aspects. Victus+ surpasses the performance of Gorilla Glass 5, which was used on the Galaxy A54 and A34, in terms of scratch resistance. This means that your new Galaxy A35 or A55 will be more resilient to everyday wear and tear, giving you peace of mind about its longevity.
Victus+, first seen on Samsung phones with the Galaxy S22, S22+, and S22 Ultra, provides nearly twice as much drop protection. Victus/Victus+ can withstand drops up to 2 meters, whereas Gorilla Glass 5 can only withstand drops from 1.2 meters.
One of the standout features of the Galaxy A35 and A55 is their water and dust resistance. With the same IP67 certification as the previous models, these phones are not just dust-proof but can also be fully submerged in fresh water at a depth of up to 0.5 meters for 30 minutes. This means you can confidently use your new phone in various environments without worrying about water or dust damage.
