Samsung India is addressing a persistent green line display issue affecting its Galaxy series by offering a free one-time screen replacement for affected models, including the Galaxy S20 and S21 series.
Samsung Offers Free Screen and Battery Replacements for Galaxy Phones with Green Line Issue in India
Reports of a green line appearing on Samsung phones have been increasing recently. Android Authority got several letters from readers stuck with green lines on their Galaxy flagships. However, this is not a new issue. The source discovered complaints on Reddit dating back to last year. More recently, Galaxy S21 series customers have reported the emergence of a green line on their devices after software updates.
Samsung appears to have taken note of the issue, at least in one country. In India, Samsung currently provides free display replacements for Galaxy S20, Galaxy S21, Galaxy Note 20, and Galaxy S22 phones affected by the green line issue. However, Samsung's replacement policy covers only the devices acquired within the last three years.
While impacted and qualified phones are not required to be under warranty to receive the free screen replacement, there is a deadline for claiming the benefit. Users with green lines on their Galaxy phones have until April 30, 2024, to schedule an appointment with a Samsung service center and take advantage of the offer. In addition, the company will also offer a free battery replacement alongside a brand-new display.
A source contacted Samsung to inquire whether this new free screen replacement policy applies to Galaxy phone consumers encountering the green line issue in places other than India. The source also asked the business whether there are other options for devices experiencing the green line issue that aren't qualified for a free replacement. Growing Concerns as 'Green Line Issue' Affects Older Samsung Galaxy Models, Sparking Hardware Fault Speculations
Multiple reports of a display issue affecting some older Samsung Galaxy cellphones have surfaced online. Known as the 'green line issue,' it appears as a thin, vertical green line that interrupts the screen and may impair phone operation. This issue appears to predominantly impact Galaxy S21 phones, with the Galaxy S21 Ultra and S21 FE variants being the most commonly mentioned.
Some people appear to have noticed the green line randomly, while others attribute it to software updates or high-volume activity, such as gaming. An X/Twitter user reported (also spotted by AndroidSage) noticing the line immediately after installing a software update on their Galaxy S21 FE. At the same time, another encountered it after installing the April patch to their Galaxy S21 Ultra (model number SMG998B).
The specific reason for the green line issue remains unknown. While it could be a software problem, most software-related issues can be resolved with a simple reboot or factory reset. The fact that the problem remains for certain customers indicates a possible hardware flaw.
The most likely source of the green line issue appears to be a faulty display connector or flex cable. These internal components connect the display to the phone's main circuit board, and any damage or looseness inside them can cause display issues.
While it's tempting to dismiss this issue as a coincidence, given it appears with or around software updates, a short check on social media sites reveals that many customers have experienced similar issues with older Samsung devices. The majority of these incidents were likewise tied to software updates.
One probable explanation is that software upgrades and environmental variables may produce enough heat (particularly on phones equipped with Samsung's Exynos chipsets) to induce or accelerate a pre-existing hardware problem within the display assembly. Some speculate that the heat could loosen the adhesive that holds the display components together, resulting in the green line issue. However, this argument is not solid, as intensive activities such as gaming produce tremendous heat yet are less usually associated with the problem.
Over the last year, the green line issue has also affected older AMOLED devices from other manufacturers. In response to similar complaints, OnePlus began offering its customers in India a lifetime screen guarantee on its own impacted devices.
While Samsung has not publicly acknowledged this issue, it has previously offered repairs and replacements for similar issues reported by Galaxy S20 series owners.
