Hundreds of eager customers lined up for Shein's inaugural pop-up store in Johannesburg, South Africa, to explore the retailer's affordable fashion offerings.
Thriving Despite Economic Challenges
Reneilwe Malahlela waited in line with about a hundred other eager customers on Friday to peruse the affordable apparel and accessories offered by Shein, a popular online retailer. Many of the items were priced at less than $10.
Keeping costs low "makes sense" for students in the current economic climate, the 24-year-old explained.
Shein Brings Online Fashion to Physical Spaces
Though it is mainly recognized as an online retailer, Shein has set up temporary shops all around the globe to sell its cheap, mostly Chinese-made clothing to a wider audience.
The store in Johannesburg, South Africa, will be open from August 2nd to the 11th.
Reuters was interviewed by Malahlela, who was seen shopping often at Shein since 2020, while wearing black leather trousers, a corset, a biker jacket, and a wig—all from the retailer.
Tennis skirts at 151 rand ($8.32) and strap handbags starting at 73 rand ($4) were among the items that customers of all ages perused in the pink-decorated boutique.
Some, like Namhla Kandawaya, 63 years old, saw a chance for profit.
"Our kids are sitting at home doing nothing. So when you come here you look at opportunities ... for them to start buying in bulk and resell," the retiree told Reuters, clutching t-shirts and khaki pants.
Exploring New Textures and Opportunities
"I wanted to feel the texture because normally when you order things online, you can't really tell whether the texture is good or bad until you see it in front of you and by then it's already late."
Per MSN, Shein's competitors argue that the company's cheap costs stem from worker exploitation or customs duty exemptions on low-value products.
The Chinese firm is spending millions to improve supply chain governance and compliance, which it attributes to its "on-demand business model and flexible supply chain" and which it claims is the key to its success.
