‘Sherlock’ Season 4 Releases First Official Trailer Featuring Scruffy Benedict Cumberbatch as Titular Sleuth, Hints Return of Andrew Scott’s Villainous Moriarty

Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock Holmes in BBC One's 'Sherlock'

‘Sherlock’ season 4 recently unveiled its first official trailer featuring a scruffy Benedict Cumberbatch as the titular sleuth. The trailer also hinted at the return of Andrew Scott’s villainous Moriarty.

According to the Telegraph, season 4’s official trailer was recently unveiled at the San Diego Comic-Con featuring the first look at Benedict Cumberbatch’s titular sleuth seemingly scruffier and more frazzled than ever. The action-packed trailer promises more dark twists for its beloved characters.

The trailer also hinted at the possible return of Andrew Scott’s antagonistic Jim Moriarty, who was believed to be dead in the preceding season. According to Den of Geek, co-creator Steven Moffatt previously teased, "I think what we can say is we may or may not see more of Andrew Scott as Moriarty." It is yet to be confirmed whether Moriarty survived or will return as a figment of Sherlock’s imagination.

Martin Freeman’s John Watson, Louise Brealey’s Molly Hooper, and Rupert Graves’s Lestrade were also featured in the trailer. Toby Jones also joins the cast as the incoming season’s latest villain. His role in the series is yet to be confirmed but Moffatt teased that Jones will be "bringing to life one of Doyle's finest villains."

Jones is best known for his breakthrough performance as Truman Capote in the 2006 biographical film ‘Infamous’. He worked in films such as ‘The Painted Veil’, ‘The Girl’, ‘Captain America: The First Avenger’, ‘Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy’, and ‘Berberian Sound Studio’. He also appeared in various television series including ‘Agent Carter’, ‘Doctor Who’, ‘Detectorists’, and ‘Wayward Pines’.

‘Sherlock’ is a British crime-drama television series based on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s detective stories. It was created by Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffatt and stars Benedict Cumberbatch in the title role of Sherlock Holmes. No official air date has been announced for season 4 as of the present.
