“Sherlock” season 5 might require fans to wait longer than they did for the previous installments of the show. The actors and creators of the series have other projects to work on, which leads some fans to speculate on a 2023 release date.
Based on previous reports, the release of “Sherlock” season 5 is pretty much sealed even though the schedule for its production and release are still unknown. However, a fan estimated that it might not arrive within the next five years considering Benedict Cumberbatch’s and Martin Freeman’s anticipated Marvel Cinematic Universe projects.
Cumberbatch portrays the titular role of Doctor Strange while Freeman returned as Everett Ross in the blockbuster hit “Black Panther.” A sequel of the standalone “Doctor Strange” film is highly anticipated to be announced after “Avengers 4.” Freeman, on the other hand, implied he will reprise the role of Everett Ross in, at least, one more Marvel film most likely before he starts working on “Sherlock” season 5.
“They introduced me in ‘Civil War’ and said there would be a couple of other films, one of which was ‘Black Panther.’ So that was always on the cards,” the “Sherlock” season 5 star told Den of Geek.
In the same interview, Freeman gave a piece of his mind about the production of “Sherlock” season 5. On a positive note, Freeman confirms that he will go back to playing Dr. Watson. However, he insisted on wanting to have a “break” from the series for now.
Aside from Freeman and Cumberbatch, the creators of the series are also working on a different project which puts the making of “Sherlock” season 5 on hold. It was confirmed that Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat are going to team up on the making of the “Dracula” series for the BBC and Netflix for viewers outside the U.K.
Despite worries that the show’s hiatus might lead to its eventual cancellation, there are several reports that give fans a positive outlook about “Sherlock” season 5. For one, Moffat assured fans that he expects them to produce more seasons of “Sherlock” though there will be a “longer gap” this time while also noting that the making of “Dracula” could take “two years at least.”
