News about “Sherlock” Season 5 has been scarce for years as the major actors and creators of the crime-solving drama have been wrapped in their own respective projects. Martin Freeman and Benedict Cumberbatch are tied to their MCU contracts and they still need to complete a couple more films before their involvement with the franchise expires.
On the other hand, show creators Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat are also busy working on their next project, “Dracula.” What’s more, Moffat is also involved in producing HBO’s adaptation of the “Time Traveler’s Wife.” With all these setbacks in the way, “Sherlock” Season 5 is expected to not return on television anytime soon. If it ever returns at all.
Even the glimmer of hope that got fans excited back in May has been dashed by Mark Gatiss. The hope came in the form of Chris Georgiou, the owner of Speedy’s Café, the very same establishment where Mycroft (Mark Gatiss) and Watson (Martin Freeman) have used as a meeting place. Georgiou said that he has “heard” that the production team is gearing up for “Sherlock” Season 5.
While this got fans perking up from their seats, Mark Gatiss quickly shot down the claim and called it “utter nonsense” on Twitter. Of course, there’s a possibility that Gatiss is actually trying to keep everything low key and pre-production might very well be underway. There’s also the chance that Georgiou’s information about “Sherlock” Season 5 is completely off the mark.
It’s just unclear at this point. What is clear is that if “Sherlock” Season 5 does return, it will not do so for at least four years if Mark Gatiss’ previous statement is anything to go by. There’s also the fact that Professor Moriarty (Andrew Scott) is out of the picture.
Moriarty has been one of the major antagonists of the series and it would be difficult to replace him given that he’s always been the antithesis of Sherlock (Benedict Cumberbatch). Right now, the possibility of “Sherlock” Season 5 happening is bleak at best. But this doesn’t stop fans from hoping that the show might return one day. After all, the series has been one of the most well-written dramas that graced television for years.
