“Sherlock” season 5 was on hiatus for so long now. The previous season was released in 2017 so more than two years had already passed and there is no sign of the show’s return yet up to now. Will it really be back?
There are fans who think that “Sherlock” season 5 was canceled by BBC a long time ago. Other people believed this rumor as well because there is no update about the series even after a long time.
Then again, fans must not worry because “Sherlock” season 5 is still in the cards. It is not canceled and in fact, BBC has not announced any cancellation order for the show. Moreover, showrunners Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat also debunked the cancellation reports by saying that they still have plans for it and the door for its production is still open wide.
"We're certainly not ruling it out. We're shooting 'Dracula' next year, that's a two or three-year process to get that from script to screen,” Gatiss said during his “On the Line” interview last year. “Even if we then started planning 'Sherlock' season 5 that would be another two years, so it's a way off."
Additionally, via an interview with Radio Times last year, Steven Moffat said, "Nobody has ever closed the door on Sherlock, we just say the same thing all the time and it gets quoted different ways.”
He added, “We haven't got an immediate plan, but I would remain surprised, given the collective enthusiasm we have for it, if we didn't do it again."
“Sherlock” season 5’s lead actors Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman also appeared to be very busy as they have movies and TV productions in their schedules. Needless to say, this is another reason why they cannot film the fifth installment of the detective drama yet.
With their current schedules, it is easy to see that they cannot commit yet to “Sherlock” season 5 but this does not mean that they are backing out from the drama. The showrunners made it clear that they are likely to return but they just do not know yet when they can all finally sit down and work on the drama.
