Switzerland’s industrial production rebounded strongly in the second quarter of 2026, rising 5.5% compared with the same period a year earlier, according to data released Wednesday by the Swiss Federal Statistical Office.
The latest figures signal a notable recovery for Switzerland’s industrial sector following a sharp contraction at the beginning of the year. The statistics cover industrial activity but exclude the construction sector.
Despite the improvement in production, industrial sales remained under pressure. Sales across Switzerland’s industrial sector declined 0.3% year-on-year during the three months through the second quarter, indicating that stronger output has yet to translate into comparable sales growth.
The second-quarter performance represents a significant turnaround from the first quarter of 2026. During the first three months of the year, Swiss industrial production fell 7.6% compared with the corresponding period in 2025.
Industrial sales also experienced a steep decline in the first quarter, dropping 7.4% year-on-year. Against that backdrop, the relatively modest 0.3% sales contraction in the second quarter suggests that conditions improved considerably even though sales remained slightly below their year-earlier level.
The latest Swiss industrial production data therefore point to a substantial shift in momentum between the first and second quarters. Output moved from a 7.6% annual decline to 5.5% growth, while the year-on-year decline in industrial sales narrowed sharply from 7.4% to 0.3%.
Switzerland’s industrial sector is an important component of the country’s economy, making production and sales figures closely watched indicators of manufacturing and broader economic activity.
The second-quarter figures provide a more positive signal for Swiss industry after the weakness recorded earlier in 2026. However, the continued annual decline in industrial sales shows that the recovery remained uneven during the quarter.
