Shinsegae confirmed that it will be building a mega shopping mall in Gwanju, and it will be called the "Starfield Gwanju." The company said on Wednesday, Aug. 17, that this would be an integrated mall that will be a first of its kind in the country's southwestern region.
The South Korean department store franchise will also expand its existing department store in the city to build the Gwanju Shinsegae Art & Culture Park. With this project, the company is aiming to make it a landmark shopping center.
According to The Korea Times, Shinsegae sees the place as the perfect site for the integrated shopping mall as it has plenty of space and scenic views. With a lot of available space, the company can set up a number of facilities for various activities and recreations.
The department store giant further revealed that the new mall would have around 300 brand shops, and these will be strategically placed inside the massive shopping center. What's more, the Starfield Gwangju will also have a water park designed for the urban setting.
Visitors can also expect gaming areas, movie houses, and a relaxing park within the mall that will be built within the vicinity of Eodeung Mountain's tourist complex. Once completed, Shinsegae's Starfield Gwanju will surely be grand and will come as a complete package for people who love to shop, dine, play, and enjoy recreational activities
Since there will be an extension of the existing Shinsegae department store Gwanju the company will be using the parking lot located in front of the mall in the city's Seo District. In any case, the company is expecting to create more than 30,000 jobs when the construction of the integrated mall is finished and another 25,000 new jobs when the expansion of the current department store is done.
"We will do our best to finalize creating a construction master plan and go through necessary administrative procedures so we can start construction," Korea Joongang Daily quoted Shinsegae Property's chief executive officer, Im Young Rok, as saying on Wednesday at a press conference.
A company official added, "We will develop Starfield Gwangju as an integrated shopping mall with distinguished content and leisure activities that can make it a touristic landmark in the city."
