Should ‘Dororo’ Season 2 take inspiration from the video game adaptation?

There’s still no word from MAPPA studio if “Dororo” Season 2 will be greenlighted. While the main story of the show has been concluded in the first entry, some fans want the series to continue.

This isn’t surprising since the bond of Hyakkimaru and the young thief is one of the most compelling relationships seen in the anime genre. News about “Dororo” Season 2 is expected to last until fall on account that the studio might still be evaluating the DVD/Blu-Ray sale of the second cour slated to hit the shelves on Aug. 21.

But this still begs the questions: is there enough justification to produce “Dororo” Season 2? Well, from a storytelling standpoint, there isn’t.

Dororo Season 2 should occur organically

As mentioned earlier, the core premise of the plot has now been completed following Hyakkimaru’s success at retrieving all 12 of his stolen limbs from various powerful demons. The writers of “Dororo” Season 2 might be hard-pressed at finding an organic way to connect Hyakkimaru’s journey to whatever new story they may come up with.

The most obvious route that the writers can take is to follow the story seen in the video game adaptation of the series. Originally, Hyakkimaru was tasked to retrieve 48 of his stolen limbs, not 12, MonsterAndCritics reported. What’s more, the final battle was supposed to be between the embattled protagonist and a demon residing within Dororo, but the idea was scrapped for the manga. The video game adaptation was the one that used this alternate ending and “Dororo” Season 2 could take inspiration from it as well.

Dororo Season 2 might hurt the series as a whole

The bad news is that with Hyakkimaru able to complete his lifelong mission, there’s no driving reason for the writers to put a demon inside Dororo. Unless, of course, they come up with a compelling narrative of how that came about. Whatever the case, the fate of “Dororo” Season 2 is still in the air, and it’s anybody's guess what MAPPA studio is planning for the series. If it has any plans at all.

Personally, I would like for “Dororo” Season 2 to not exist as the ending of the first entry is perfect already. There are a lot of single-season animes out there that became household names and this show ranks among them. I guess we’ll just have to wait until fall rolls around to see if MAPPA reveals anything. In the meantime, fans can watch Hyakkimaru below make an appearance in the “Young Black Jack” series, along with Mio and Dororo.
