Taking selfies with only a smartphone or with the help of a monopod has gotten stale. These days, people have started experimenting with new ways to take pictures with their phones with interesting angles and gimmicks. Enter the Airselfie, which is basically a smartphone case that can also turn into an honest to goodness flying drone.
The Airselfie currently has a Kickstarter campaign, which has already raised more than €500,000 ($534,000) for the makers of the drone, Business Insider reports. For those who want to pre-order their own unit, they can do so at the product’s official website. The drone case costs $260 and is scheduled to become available around May 2017.
Proceeding to what exactly the Airselfie is supposed to be able to do, it basically houses a miniature drone that can be controlled via the smartphone and is equipped with a 5MP camera. The simple idea behind it is to enable users to take selfies from an angle that they wouldn’t normally be able to take shots from because of restrictions in length.
Arms are obviously going to have trouble taking a shot of an entire scenic background and depending on the size, even selfie sticks might have trouble providing enough width. This is where the Airselfie comes in by basically taking a picture from further away or even from an elevated position, Futurism reports.
On the surface, the smartphone case drone isn’t really introducing a new concept to the market since people have been using bigger drones equipped with cameras to take photos and videos of themselves for years. However, the Airselfie does come with a few advantages that make it an attractive prospect for a lot of consumers.
For one thing, it can be carried anywhere with no trouble since people walk around with their phones all the time anyway. For another, it costs a fraction of the price that some of the high-end drone units have.
