Song Joong Ki attends press conference for ‘Space Sweepers’; Actor reveals the difficulties of filming South Korea’s first sci-fi movie

Song Joong Ki

Song Joong Ki is starring in South Korea’s very first sci-fi movie. Based on the teasers, many are predicting that it will be a blockbuster hit even in the midst of the pandemic.

The movie’s director and cast recently attended the press conference for “Space Sweepers” that was held online. It was initially set to be held at CGV Yongsan I-Park Mall but as News Inside reported, the venue was changed at the last minute.

They moved to an online platform after the government issued an upgraded protocol for social distancing. It was said that level 2 was raised which means people could not gather to prevent the spread of COVID-19 as Seoul recorded a spike in cases.

Joong Ki’s thoughts on filming South Korea’s very first sci-fi flick

Song Joong Ki is the lead cast member in “Space Sweepers” and he plays Tae Ho, the rugged pilot of the spacecraft called The Victory. During the press conference, he admitted that he knows that filming this movie will be challenging and it really was.

Song Hye Kyo’s ex-husband also mentioned this is actually his second time working with director Jo Sung Hee so this somehow helped ease the difficulties on the set. The first time that they worked together was in the movie “A Werewolf Boy.”

“Even while we were filming ‘A Werewolf Boy’ nine years ago, I’d heard that he was preparing for a space-themed sci-fi film,” Soompi quoted Joong Ki as saying. “I thought the concept of space junk was new and I was attracted to the challenge in making South Korea’s first space-themed sci-fi film.”

As for Director Jo, he said that the movie really started around 10 years ago. He narrated that he was having a meal with his friend when he heard that the junk in space left by space missions is rapidly spreading and this is dangerous. That was the time that he thought of a film with a concept of people collecting those junk in the vast celestial space.

The movie’s plot and release date

“Space Sweepers” is about a group of garbage collectors in space. They travel deep in space to get the space junks that they can sell for big profits. The movie is set in the year 2092 and this group is traversing the void through their Victory space vehicle.

Song Joong Ki’s comeback movie is set to premiere on Sept. 23.
