There were earlier speculations that Sony’s next-generation console, PlayStation 5, could be released this year. But there have been new updates recently suggesting that gaming fans will have to wait for more than a year from now before seeing the new rig in stores.
When Wired interviewed Sony PlayStation lead system architect Mark Cerny, there were several details confirmed about PlayStation 5. First of all, Cerny reportedly referred to PlayStation 5 as a “next-generation console” multiple times. And, unfortunately, he shattered everyone’s hopes of seeing it in 2019 as he confirmed there is no way the console will be released this year.
This then brings gaming fans to the next most possible release date window — 2020. Cerny shared some information about PlayStation 5’s hardware specs, but he remained secretive about its launch schedule. However, it has been a while since reports came out that Sony started giving away dev kits for gaming developers possibly working on PlayStation 5-compatible titles. And after announcing important specs details, a 2020 release date seems plausible.
Sony might want to hold off on announcing PlayStation 5’s release date, but fans can take a look at the previous release dates for previous generations of PlayStation console. Most Sony gaming consoles and its respective iterations had a Q3 launch. More specifically, the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 were both released in November in 2006 and 2013, respectively.
The millions of PlayStation units sold over the years could be proof that Sony’s chosen release date windows through the decades work well for the company and its products. With that considered, there may not be a big reason to switch up the usual timeline. In this case, PlayStation 5 could be released in late 2020 — specifically, in November.
Sony also held an unveiling event for PlayStation 3 and 4 within Q1 of the year when these were released. If the speculations are correct and Sony intends to release PlayStation 5 in late 2020, an announcement in Q1 of next year might be in order as well.
