SpaceX is looking to hire a natural gas trader to establish and lead a new trading team as the aerospace company expands its fuel and electricity requirements across its operations.

According to a job posting, the Cape Canaveral, Florida-based position will focus on physical and financial natural gas trading. The successful candidate will be responsible for originating, structuring and executing transactions designed to support SpaceX’s increasing power and fuel demand.

Applicants must have a bachelor’s degree and at least four years of relevant experience. SpaceX is seeking candidates with backgrounds in natural gas or energy commodity trading, energy market analysis, material cost control, or engineering and finance roles connected to energy commodities.

The hiring push comes as SpaceX increases its exposure to natural gas. Earlier this month, the company announced plans to develop its own gas-fired power plants to supply electricity for a large semiconductor manufacturing facility being developed in Texas with Tesla. Demand for new natural gas power generation has been rising as data centers and advanced manufacturing facilities consume increasing amounts of electricity.

Natural gas is also important to SpaceX’s core spaceflight operations. The company’s Starship rocket uses super-chilled methane, the main component of natural gas, together with liquid oxygen as its propellant.

SpaceX said the trader will manage market positions based on a broad range of factors, including fundamental and technical indicators, weather conditions, fuel markets, emissions policies, regulatory developments and operational requirements. Building an in-house natural gas trading operation could give the company greater control over energy procurement, costs and supply risks as its infrastructure expands.

The position requires employees to work on-site in Cape Canaveral, with remote arrangements unavailable. Candidates must also be able to pass required Air Force background checks and be prepared to travel for as much as 50% of the work week, including international trips.
