A SpaceX Starship test flight ended in failure on Thursday, scattering debris over the Caribbean and causing major flight disruptions near Turks and Caicos. The incident led to temporary ground stops at four major Florida airports, including Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Orlando, and Palm Beach.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) halted departures for over an hour, delaying flights by an average of 45 minutes. The FAA also activated a debris response area, slowing or stopping aircraft movement to ensure safety. Operations resumed later in the evening.
The failed Starship launch triggered an FAA investigation, requiring SpaceX to conduct a mishap inquiry into the loss of its spacecraft. Starship, designed for deep-space missions to Mars and beyond, has faced multiple setbacks during test flights.
This incident highlights the ongoing challenges in commercial spaceflight and its growing impact on air travel.
