‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ is set to star Tom Holland as the titular web slinging superhero in his first standalone film in the MCU. ‘Civil War’ co-star Chris Evans said that he wanted Captain America to cameo in the reboot together with Holland. Meanwhile, Michael Keaton is reportedly in talks to play a yet unnamed villain who may turn out to be Vulture.
During an interview with MTV, Evans admitted that he would like to do a cameo for Holland’s new standalone film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He said, Guardians would be fun, wouldn’t it?... but it’s very outer spacey. Cap’s more of an Earth-bound guy… Maybe the next Spider-Man. Those are going to be fantastic, and I think Tom [Holland]’s just a great actor, so that might be a fun one to pop up into.”
Evans and Holland shared their first on-screen appearance together in Joe and Anthony Russo’s ‘Captain America: Civil War’ released in May 6. Evans donned his superhero armor as the titular Steve Rogers a.k.a. Captain America while Holland did his first performance as the new Peter Parker a.k.a. Spider-Man. Their two characters fought on opposing sides, however, with Spider-Man being on Iron Man’s team and Captain America leading his own superhero group.
Although no confirmation has been made regarding Evans’ possible cameo, Robert Downey Jr. will be appearing on ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ as Tony Stark a.k.a. Iron Man. Downey Jr.’s character was the one who recruited Peter into his group of fighters in ‘Civil War’ after confronting the teenager about his unusual spider-like abilities.
According to Entertainment Weekly, Holland’s standalone MCU film will also star Marisa Tomei, Zendaya, Tony Revolori, and Laura Harrier. Michael Keaton is reportedly in talks to play a yet unspecified villain.
Another article on MovieWeb suggested that Keaton may be playing the role of Adrian Toomes a.k.a. Vulture. This possible casting choice may not come as a surprise considering Keaton’s critically-acclaimed performance on Alejandro G. Innaritu’s ‘Birdman’. Vulture is a villain that was featured in past Spider-Man media and is known for his superhuman strength, powers of temporary levitation as well as supreme intelligence.
‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ is intended as a standalone superhero film in the MCU starring Tom Holland as the latest actor to portray a big-screen adaptation of Spider-Man. The film is produced by Amy Pascal and Kevin Feig and is co-produced by Eric Hauserman-Carroll. Stan Lee and Matthew Tolmach are serving as executive producers.
Previous ‘Spider-Man’ adaptations include Sam Raimi’s trilogy starring Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst. Despite mixed reception, the films proved to be box office successes with the first film earning $821 million at the worldwide box office against a $139 million budget, the second earning $708.9 million against a $200 million budget and the third earning $890 million against a $258 million budget.
Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone also starred in Marc Webb’s ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ reboots. The films were met with critical and mainstream success at the box office as well.
