British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is reportedly weighing his political future after Andy Burnham’s commanding parliamentary election victory intensified calls within the Labour Party for a change in leadership.
According to sources familiar with the matter, Starmer spent the weekend discussing his position with family members and close allies. The Labour leader could decide as early as Monday whether to remain in office and contest any leadership challenge or step aside to allow a transition of power.
Pressure on Starmer has grown significantly following Burnham’s decisive win in a parliamentary seat in northwestern England. The result has encouraged dozens of Labour lawmakers and several ministers to privately urge the prime minister to establish a timetable for his departure, paving the way for Burnham, the former Greater Manchester mayor, to seek the party leadership.
One source said an anticipated conversation between Starmer and Burnham could prove crucial in determining the prime minister’s next move. Despite the growing speculation, there was no confirmation that the two had spoken by the end of the weekend.
Adding to the political turbulence, U.S. President Donald Trump publicly predicted on Truth Social that Starmer would resign as UK prime minister. Trump also criticized Starmer’s record on immigration and North Sea oil production, claiming the British leader had failed to deliver meaningful results.
Starmer’s leadership has come under increasing scrutiny following Labour’s poor performance in May’s local elections. Recent surveys among Labour members suggest Burnham would be favored in a formal leadership contest, further weakening Starmer’s position.
Reports also indicated that Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper privately encouraged Starmer to step down, although her office declined to comment. Business Secretary Peter Kyle acknowledged the prime minister was reflecting on the significant political challenges confronting his government.
While Starmer recently insisted he would contest any leadership challenge, growing support for Burnham and public calls for an orderly succession have fueled expectations that Labour may soon face a pivotal leadership transition. If Burnham ultimately succeeds Starmer, he would become Britain’s seventh prime minister in the last decade.
