Shortly after the National Basketball Association’s free agency opened earlier this month, there have already been blockbuster acquisitions, especially for teams in the Western Conference. Recently, Golden State Warriors point guard and star player Stephen Curry shared some insights into how their success as a team affects other organizations’ decisions in building their own rosters.
In a recent interview, USA Today asked Curry about the fact that this is the second consecutive year that an NBA superstar has been signed to a different team in the Western Conference. While it is always every team’s goal to make their lineup stronger through trades, drafts, and free agency, there is also the obvious target of preventing the Golden State Warriors from winning another championship.
When asked if he thinks all these bold moves from NBA organizations and star players are influenced by the continuing successful run of the Golden State Warriors season after season, Stephen Curry said that is the case “for sure.” “If I was on the other side, and I wasn’t on the team that was the last man standing and holding the trophy, you try to exhaust all efforts to try to figure out how to get better as a team, get in a better situation, whatever the case is,” Curry said. “But it also goes both ways, because we’re trying to get better too.”
Last year, Chris Paul signed with the Houston Rockets, further strengthening the team along with James Harden. With the duo, the Rockets almost stole the Western Conference championship from the Golden State Warriors, extending the series to Game 7. But, as many NBA fans probably know by now, Stephen Curry’s team managed to thwart the Rockets from facing the Cleveland Cavaliers in the NBA Finals 2018.
This summer, another major deal was reached in the free agency with the four-time NBA MVP and 14-time NBA All-Star player LeBron James making the move to the Los Angeles Lakers. With an upsetting season 2017-18 with the Cavaliers, fans can expect James to come back to the court even hungrier for a championship win.
On the other hand, the Golden State Warriors have also made a big move on their part by signing DeMarcus Cousins from the free agency. Stephen Curry expressed how this new addition is exciting for him and said, “Knowing what he’s been through, with his Achilles (tear in February) and the recovery and the opportunity he has to come back and prove a lot of people wrong, I like that. I like a motivated and driven DeMarcus coming back from this injury and helping us win another championship, so it’s going to be crazy and exciting.”
