May 5 through May 11, 2025, Strategy (previously MicroStrategy) purchased 13,390 Bitcoin at $1.34 billion on an average cost basis of $99,856 per BTC. The purchase, via the company's at-the-market equity plans, brought Strategy's Bitcoin holdings to 568,840 BTC. The company's total investment in Bitcoin is $39.41 billion at an average cost basis of $69,287 per coin.
As of May 12, 2025, Strategy's position in Bitcoin was worth about $60 billion based on the almost $100,000 price per Bitcoin. Strategy reported a 15.5% year-to-date return on Bitcoin and boosted its return aim to 25% by year-end. Strategy purchased as demand from institutions persists to grow and there are monumental flows into U.S.-listed spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds.
Strategy's continued investment in Bitcoin as its primary treasury reserve continues to display confidence in the cryptocurrency's value in the long run. However, some market participants have been concerned about the risk of investing in Bitcoin at high levels, especially on margin. Strategy is still the largest institutional holder of Bitcoin.
