Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha called for Europe to define a complementary role in peace efforts as Kyiv prepares for next week’s talks with Russia and the United States in Abu Dhabi.

At a news conference in Bucharest on Nov. 5, Sybiha said Kyiv expected new support steps after the U.S. midterm election. “We expect new steps to support Ukraine,” he said, without specifying what they would involve.

Sybiha said it was not realistic to end the war without the United States and President Donald Trump. He called for Europe to develop a contribution alongside and complementary to the U.S. effort.

On negotiations, Sybiha said Ukraine would pursue any opening to advance peace efforts and urged pressure on Russia. He said the battlefield offered no indication that Moscow was ready for serious talks.

His comments came ahead of next week’s discussions with Russia and the United States in Abu Dhabi.
