Facebook has allowed the world to become more interconnected and aware of people’s lives than ever. Thanks to its Newsfeed, users can share everything about their lives to friends and strangers, even the things that can be considered inappropriate. However, it would seem that one case has gone a little too far, where an 18-year-old girl in Austria is suing her parents over embarrassing childhood photos.
The plaintiff in question is not named under Austria’s privacy laws, but she is of age, which allowed her to sue her parents. She is claiming that they violated her privacy by sharing over 500 pictures that were taken when she was a child to their more than 700 friends, many of which involved compromising situations, Telegraph reports.
The teen spoke with the local publication The Local, where she shared her reasons for objecting to what she considered was grossly oversharing. It wasn’t the fact that she was still a child in the photos. It was the fact that she was exposed in a lot of them.
“They knew no shame and no limits,” she said. “They didn't care if I was sitting on the toilet or lying naked in the cot, every moment was photographed and made public.”
The complainant also said that she had requested for her parents to take the photos down many times before resorting to the lawsuit, but they had refused every single time. She had apparently gotten tired of not being taken seriously, which is why she filed the lawsuit when she turned 18.
When she spoke with her father about the photos, he had apparently told her that he could do with them what he willed. As a result, parents and child will come face to face in November for the hearing. If she wins, teen could get financial compensation from the mother and father, and they would be forced to remove the photos.
