In a bold move toward autonomous electric vehicles, Tesla has introduced a wireless charging solution for its Cybertruck and Robotaxi. Debuted at the Robotaxi unveiling, this technology eliminates charging ports, streamlining the way EVs power up.
Tesla Pushes Wireless Charging for Future EVs
Following its debut during the Robotaxi reveal, Tesla has now provided a more detailed look at their forthcoming wireless electric vehicle charging station.
As Electrek points out, the issue that wireless charging resolves is not particularly significant. This makes plugging in your car, which isn't particularly laborious or time-consuming, unnecessary.
Autonomous Vehicles and Self-Charging Capability
However, in preparation for self-driving technologies, Tesla has previously mentioned automating the process. A self-charging capability would be a logical addition to autonomous vehicles if they could drive themselves.
However, wireless charging has recently become Tesla's preferred method for automating this process, after years of favoring an arm-mounted robot.
Tesla’s Teased Wireless Home Charging Station
The above-pictured wireless home charging station was a teaser from Tesla last year. Apart from publishing this photo as part of a presentation, the carmaker made no comments about the incident.
Having said that, the picture does depict a wireless charging station, and Tesla did, in fact, own a wireless charging company for a while before giving it back (though they did integrate some of its employees).
Tesla Confirms Wireless Charging Technology
Also, a wireless charging station is something that Tesla is working on, as lead designer Franz von Holzhausen has just confirmed.
In addition, we found out earlier this year that the Cybertruck includes inductive charging ports, which might be used to install a wireless charging pad in the future.
Robotaxi to Feature Wireless Charging Exclusively
During the unveiling of the new Robotaxi at Tesla's 'We, Robot' event, the carmaker announced that wireless charging will be the future method for fueling its autonomous vehicles.
The latest video from Tesla shows off their wireless charging pad better than anything we've seen thus far:
25 kW Charging Rate Shown in Latest Demo
The carmaker even went to extreme lengths with the Robotaxi, leaving off a charging connector. Wireless charging appears to be the sole option for recharging the vehicle.
A 25 kW charging rate is shown in the video:
