Tesla is reportedly preparing to unveil its long-delayed next-generation Roadster as early as August, potentially showcasing SpaceX-developed cold-gas thrusters in a dramatic demonstration at SpaceX’s McGregor, Texas, testing facility.
The report provided a modest boost to Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) shares, which rose 1.3% in pre-market trading. The potential Roadster reveal comes as Tesla stock has fallen nearly 25% in 2026, while the Nasdaq has gained about 15%.
According to The Information, the demonstration vehicle features a thruster system internally code-named “A71.” The remotely operated Roadster will have no driver, will not be street legal and could cost hundreds of thousands—or potentially millions—of dollars. Spectators are expected to remain several hundred yards away because the high-pressure gas thrusters could pose a hearing risk.
Tesla first unveiled the second-generation Roadster prototype in 2017, promising acceleration from 0 to 60 mph in 1.9 seconds and deliveries beginning in 2020. However, the project has repeatedly faced delays, with the optional SpaceX thruster package proving particularly challenging.
Tesla Vice President of Vehicle Engineering Lars Moravy recently confirmed that the Roadster remains under development and said the company is preparing a “mind blowing” demonstration. Chief designer Franz von Holzhausen also said the vehicle is coming “very soon.” Meanwhile, Elon Musk fueled speculation on August 12 by posting on X, “You will get flying cars.”
The demonstration has reportedly been scaled back from more ambitious concepts previously presented to Musk, including driving upside down on a magnetized ramp and hovering. Musk has also acknowledged that the planned Roadster stunt could be difficult to execute successfully.
Tesla has reportedly considered selling the SpaceX-branded, track-only demonstration vehicle to wealthy enthusiasts through a program similar to Ferrari’s XX Programme. However, there is still no confirmed delivery date for customers who placed $250,000 deposits for standard Roadster reservations years ago.
While the Tesla Roadster is unlikely to become a major revenue source, its SpaceX thruster technology could serve as a high-profile showcase of Tesla’s engineering ambitions and the growing collaboration between Musk’s companies.
