Elon Musk has been teasing the world with Tesla’s Solar Roofs for some time now and they are finally available for anyone to order. Based on the details revealed so far, it would seem that the products are incredibly cheap and have a warranty that effectively lasts up to infinity. Best of all, Musk claims that the solar roofs look better than most commercial roofs.
The solar roofs are now available for pre-order at Tesla with deposits going for $1,000, Bloomberg reports. The publication notes that the product is actually more expensive to buy and install than normal roofs but is much cheaper compared to the roof and solar panels from other companies combined.
For example, a 2,000 square foot house could cost about $50,000 but would yield $64,000 worth of energy in the course of 30 years. According to Tesla, the warranty for the solar roofs will last for as long as the house is still standing and Musk even claimed that the tiles are going to outlive the buildings because of how tough they are.
This new product of Tesla is part of Musk’s grand scheme of creating a unified ecosystem with its offerings, which include the Powerpack home battery and its electric cars. The tech revolutionary says so himself when he described these three aspects as the key to a sustainable future.
“These are really the three legs of the stool for a sustainable energy future,” Musk explained. “Solar power going to a stationary battery pack so you have power at night, and then charging an electric vehicle … you can scale that to all the world’s demand.”
Musk also assured customers that having the solar roofs, which are only two of the four models that Tesla will be offering eventually, will make their homes look better than any other in the neighborhood, USA Today reports. The Tesla boss even went as far as to say that most roofs, which are usually asphalt shingles, look terrible.
