Tesla’s 2024 “We, Robot” event revealed exciting advancements, including the debut of the Cybercab and Robovan, along with updates on the Optimus humanoid robot and the highly anticipated Model 2. Elon Musk also discussed Tesla's autonomous future and its cost-efficient robotaxi services.
Tesla Unveils Cybercab with Advanced AI5 Hardware, Offers Brief Updates on Model 2 and Optimus Robot
"We, Robot," Tesla's eagerly anticipated 2024 event, has commenced, exhibiting the company's most recent autonomy-driven innovations. One of the most anticipated announcements is the unveiling of the Cybercab, which has the potential to become a Cybervan. Additionally, Tesla has provided updates on its sub-$30,000 Model 2 and has disclosed new information regarding the humanoid Optimus robot.
The Cybercab, the culmination of Tesla's autonomous aspirations, is anticipated to be constructed on a novel platform specifically designed for the Model 2. According to reports, the Cybercab is expected to have a two-seat interior, butterfly-wing entrances, and a minimalist design with a single central screen. Notably, Tesla's emphasis on Full Self-Driving (FSD) technology may be underscored by the absence of a conventional steering wheel and pedals.
The vehicle will be equipped with Tesla's AI5 hardware, substantially improving the HW3 and HW4 systems. According to Wccftech, this hardware boasts ten times greater capability than HW4. Some analyses of early images suggest that the AI5 may incorporate LiDAR technology.
Elon Musk has expressed his confidence that Tesla's FSD will achieve the requisite level of autonomy to enable robotaxi services by the end of the year. Nevertheless, Ming-Chi Kuo, a renowned Apple analyst, recently proposed that the Cybercab's mass production may commence in the first quarter of 2027. Nonetheless, Tesla anticipates implementing its robotaxi services in the interim by allowing current Tesla owners to provide ride-sharing services through a new mobility application.
The Cybervan is expected to be available in a commercial version with a minimalist interior or a family-oriented design that includes backseat displays and gaming controllers. The official launch date has yet to be confirmed.
The Model 2, Tesla's less expensive vehicle priced at less than $30,000, was only briefly mentioned during the event, and there were few updates. There is speculation that the Cybercab may replace the Model 3 as Tesla's entry-level vehicle, as there is no imminent Model 2 release.
Elon Musk Reveals Optimus Robot Pricing and Unveils Cybercab and Robovan at Tesla’s ‘We, Robot’ Event
Elon Musk also provided an update on the Optimus humanoid robot, stating that the robot's production costs will be between $20,000 and $30,000 once full-scale manufacturing commences.
The event was delayed due to a medical emergency; however, Musk disclosed substantial information regarding the Cybercab upon its commencement. He verified that the Cybercab will have an operating cost of approximately $0.20 per mile and will cost less than $30,000. It is worth noting that the Cybercab will be equipped with inductive charging, eliminating the necessity for plugged-in charging.
Tesla also unveiled the Robovan, a vehicle capable of accommodating up to 20 passengers and intended for commercial and passenger use. Although no launch date was specified, it is estimated to have an operating cost of $0.05 to $0.10 per mile.
The We, Robot event offered thrilling insights into Tesla's future but failed to address several critical inquiries, particularly those related to the Model 2. Musk demonstrated the company's ongoing commitment to innovation and autonomy by presenting the Cybercab, Robovan, and Optimus robots, emphasizing cost-efficiency and mass production.
