Right now, Tesla is the biggest name in the electric car business, which is fuelled by the fact that it is now the most valuable auto company in the US. However, its vehicles aren’t exactly the most affordable options, which is a turn-off to a lot of prospective buyers. The $35,000 Model 3 is set to change that, but there is a much cheaper option in the Nissan LEAF, which a non-profit just made even more affordable.
In its base price, the LEAF costs nearly as much as what the Tesla Model 3 is expected to, at $30, 680. However, an organization called Wisconsin Clean Cities really wants to make EVs more accessible to the common customers. This is why it is prepared to offer a massive discount to customers who will buy 2016 and 2017 models of the Nissan vehicle, effectively slashing $17, 500 from their original prices.
That is a 57 percent reduction in price, which should go a long way towards making it significantly more appealing to the larger consumer market. At this point, Tesla only has its base Model S 60 as its cheapest available offer, which still stands at $69, 500. In a press release, Wisconsin Clean Cities Executive Director Lorrie Lisek explained that this project is meant to benefit everybody.
“Wisconsin Clean Cities is thrilled to build on the successes of the two previous REV UP WISCONSIN cycles to allow for expanded use of electric vehicles in the state at a reduced price to consumers,” the press release reads. “When you are able to combine cost savings with emissions reductions and cleaner air, everyone wins.”
Now, there are a few things that EV enthusiasts should note about the Nissan LEAF. It only has a maximum range of around 107 miles on a single charge. It also doesn’t provide the same performance or features that can be expected from Tesla’s vehicles. At the end of the day, there’s a reason why Elon Musk’s cars cost an arm and a leg.
