There will be two core characters leaving the zombie-infested world in “The Walking Dead” season 9 and one of them is Maggie (Lauren Cohan). But here is some good news. Showrunner Angela Kang hints that her departure could be temporary.
Maggie’s exit has been confirmed for several months now. But it was also made known that she will not leave because of death. And now more good news arrives hinting that Maggie might return after “The Walking Dead” season 9.
Kang recently told ComicBook, “I'll say first of all that we've still planned some more story with Maggie.” “The Walking Dead” season 9 is Kang’s first official season as the showrunner after working as a writing staff member in 2011 and being promoted as a producer in 2012.
In the same interview, Kang revealed that Cohan also hopes to come back while it is apparently her decision to leave in “The Walking Dead” season 9. “It will be a little subject to her schedule but hopefully we have her back next season,” Kang explained.
The scheduling issue Kang mentioned could be referring to Cohan’s new series on ABC. After her “The Walking Dead” season 9 stint, she will star as CIA operative Francesca “Frankie” Trowbridge a.k.a. Fiery Tribune in a new show called “Whiskey Cavalier," slated to premiere in 2019.
Meanwhile, Kang also promised that once Maggie returns after “The Walking Dead” season 9, the Hilltop Colony leader will have “a very strong Maggie arc." Does this mean Maggie could take over Rick Grimes’s (Andrew Lincoln) leadership role in case Cohan comes back?
Aside from Maggie, Rick is also confirmed to leave in “The Walking Dead” season 9. Whether he is going to die or not has yet to be confirmed. But it appears that Lincoln will be exiting the show for good.

While the days of Rick in “The Walking Dead” season 9 are numbered, Lincoln recently teased that the story still managed to show a huge development in Rick and Michonne’s (Danai Gurira) relationship.
Lincoln is leaving but Jeffrey Dean Morgan is not, which means the protagonists might soon regret the decision of not killing Negan. “The Walking Dead” season 9 will premiere on Sunday, Oct. 7, at 9 p.m. ET on AMC.
