“The Walking Dead” season 9's explosive season premiere brought fans massive changes in one episode more than the 18-month time skip between season 8 and season 9. The rift between the show's main cast was emphasized in the first episode but fans may not have been ready for the surprise that Maggie (Lauren Cohan) hangs Gregory (Xander Berkeley) so early in the season.
But it seems such surprises may not be the only things fans can expect from “The Walking Dead” season 9. For fans worried about the current season being Rick Grimes's (Andrew Lincoln) last season for the show, “The Walking Dead” season 9 may give some answers about his fate through familiar faces further into the series.
TV Line recently reported that Sonequa Martin-Green and Scott Wilson – who portrayed Sasha and Herschel, respectively – will be coming back to reprise their roles in “The Walking Dead” season 9. Martin-Green and Wilson will supposedly join Jon Bernthal, who was announced earlier to once again reprise his role of Shane. The return of old characters is stoking fan speculation considering that all three characters have already died in some way during the show's previous seasons.
While “The Walking Dead” season 9 showrunner Angela King did not disclose how the dead characters will be important to the current season's plot, fans can speculate the characters returning as flashbacks for Rick Grimes, which could provide insight into his current role as leader of the community. Such a comeback is not farfetched as Jon Bernthal already reprised his role in season 3 as a figment of Rick Grime's imagination.
Fans looking forward to how Sasha, Herschel, and Shane will play a part in the future of the new Sanctuary can look forward to “The Walking Dead” season 9's next episode when it airs on Oct. 14.
