“The Winds of Winter” is already almost nine years in the making, and up to now, it has yet to arrive. What’s worst is that the HBO drama series that was based on George RR Martin’s “A Song of Ice and Fire” book series was forced to conclude without waiting for sixth and seventh books to finish.
The “TWOW” delays
The “GOT” series ended with eight seasons in May last year, but the “ASOIAF” series doesn’t even have its sixth book out of seven. Apparently, some fans are extremely disappointed already since it is taking a while for “The Winds of Winter” to be released. Plus, what frustrated them the most is the fact that GRRM keeps dropping a deadline, yet he could not fulfill them.
Martin once said that he would refrain from making promises anymore so that fans will not be disappointed when he is unable to release “The Winds of Winter.” But a few months after this declaration, the 71-year-old wrote in his blog that he would make sure to get the book out in time for the Worldcon in New Zealand this year.
“If I don’t have ‘THE WINDS OF WINTER’ in hand when I arrive in New Zealand for Worldcon, you have here my formal written permission to imprison me in a small cabin on White Island, overlooking that lake of sulfuric acid, until I’m done,” he wrote in May 2019.
The author also admitted that he is actually having a hard time finishing the book due to many reasons, and one of the things he mentioned is that he keeps changing or editing some chapters, and this is making his work slower than usual. On the other hand, while he mentioned why he could not finish “TWOW,” fans noted that he should have also said that the book always gets delayed because he keeps accepting new jobs, and he even completed and released a book that was already released last year.
Martin announced he is in self-quarantine
Now, in his new blog entry dated March 17, Martin announced that he is in self-isolation in a remote location. He said that he knows that he is one of the most vulnerable individuals to get the COVID-19 virus due to his physical condition and age; thus, he voluntarily went on self-quarantine, attended only by one of his staff.
The author added that since he is in isolation, he has more time writing and doing it every day. He even said that he has been spending more time in Westeros than in the real world these days.
With that said, fans are hoping that this could be it - the time has finally come when Martin is left with no work in hand but to write. Finally, Forbes suggests that “The Winds of Winter” will be finished soon, and this could be one of the silver linings that can come out from all of this coronavirus lockdown.
