“This Is Us” season 3 episode 2, titled "A Philadelphia Story,” is coming next week and it will reveal more drama as the starting point of Rebecca and Jack’s relationship is explored. The series premiered with an episode called “Nine Bucks” and it already presented heartrending scenes, starting with the Big 3’s 38th birthday celebration.
In the pilot, it was revealed that although their relationship was perfect as husband and wife, Jack and Rebecca did not really hit it off in the beginning. The episode highlighted flashbacks at a time when the two were still getting to know each other. With this said, most of “This Is Us” season 3 episode 1 was focused on the events that occurred in the '70s.
Based on the “This Is Us” season 3 episode 2 promo, it appears that more hardships will continue to unfold. As per IMDb, the synopsis for this chapter reads: "The Pearsons gather to support Kevin at his movie premiere. The teenage Big Three make college decisions."
With the synopsis hinting at the Big Three’s teenage years, “This Is Us” season 3 episode 2 may feature a time jump to the '90s. It will also focus on Rebecca as she faces troubles with her triplets. Later in the episode, the plot will also touch on Toby and Kate’s fertility problem.
In the trailer, Jack is no longer around and it shows the teenage Randall asking his mom Rebecca if she noticed Kevin’s drinking or Kate’s excessive eating, to which she plainly replied, "I'm doing the very best I can."
“This Is Us” season 3 episode 2 will also dig more into the consequences after Toby secretly gets rid of his antidepressants to have a baby with Kate (Chrissy Metz). His decision proved to be a bad idea as his withdrawal symptoms turned him into some hotheaded person who lashes out at his family.
“We showed last season it does take him to a very dark place, so we know that’s coming,” EP Elizabeth Berger told Entertainment Weekly. “And we’re going to be watching him come undone throughout the beginning of the season.”
Chrissy Metz (Kate) added that Toby’s choice was “driven by his and Kate’s worries and fears. “There’s so much guilt they both have,” she said. “It’s one thing when you want to have a baby and she feels like she’s not doing her part as a woman and Toby’s like, ‘I’m not doing my part as a husband or a man to help her conceive.”
Meanwhile, “This Is Us” season 3 episode 2 will air on Tuesday, Oct. 2 on NBC.
