With the recent string of security breaches occurring among even the most secure websites in the world, the social media giant Facebook and the pad online video streaming king Netflix are not taking any chances. They are sending out emails to users, urging them to change their passwords, particularly those who are using “12345” for multiple accounts. Those who received such emails from either or both websites are advised to follow their instructions immediately.
The spate of major hacking development recently has people on edge, so it’s only natural that users would be wary of receiving emails from people and entities they don’t know, even those that look official. As a matter of fact, users have been long told by experts to avoid opening any emails from unfamiliar sources until they verify the legitimacy of said sources.
However, the social network and movie streaming sites really have been sending out emails, warning their users that their accounts may have been compromised. As such, Engadget is encouraging people to look through the emails again if they still have them.
Cybersecurity experts are already making note of these developments, particularly since these online giants have been scanning data in the emails, passwords, and user accounts that have been stolen and sold to see if their own users are among the casualties. If they confirm that this is indeed the case, they contact the users to inform them of what happened and then force them to change their passwords in order to protect them.
Two of the major examples of how much damage hackers are able to do include the 117 million passwords stolen from LinkedIn and the online robbery of PayPal accounts that afflicted users of TeamViewer. These are not minor cases which only targeted one or two individuals. It’s become clear that hackers are now threatening millions of people who are using the internet every day, and staying vigilant is one of the best ways to stop them.
