President Donald Trump’s approval rating has fallen to the lowest point of his presidency as Americans grow increasingly concerned about the prolonged U.S. conflict with Iran and rising gasoline prices, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll.
The four-day survey found that just 33% of Americans approve of Trump’s job performance, while 64% disapprove. His approval rating slipped from 35% earlier this month and now matches the lowest level recorded during his first term in December 2017.
Trump returned to the White House in 2025 with approval from nearly half of Americans, but public support has weakened following his decision to launch strikes against Iran alongside Israel. The conflict disrupted oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz, pushing gasoline prices higher and increasing financial pressure on U.S. households.
Although Trump initially suggested the Iran war would last only a few weeks, 80% of Americans now expect U.S. involvement to continue for an extended period. That includes 87% of Democrats and 71% of Republicans. Only 16% believe the conflict will end within weeks.
Trump has defended higher fuel costs as a necessary price for preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon. However, only about one in five Americans believe the war has been worth the cost, including roughly half of Republican respondents.
The political fallout could complicate Republican efforts to maintain their narrow House majority in the November 3 midterm elections. Democrats have also gained ground on economic issues, with 38% of voters saying they trust Democrats more to manage the economy, compared with 35% who favor Republicans.
Republicans still hold a slight advantage on immigration, but their lead has narrowed sharply. The poll found 40% of registered voters prefer the Republican approach, versus 38% for Democrats, compared with a 26-point Republican advantage in January 2025.
The Reuters/Ipsos online poll surveyed 1,166 U.S. adults nationwide and carries a margin of error of approximately three percentage points.
