Trump's remarks follow his claim that Ukraine was responsible for Russia’s 2022 invasion, sparking concerns in Europe over a shift in U.S. policy favoring Moscow.
Trump, who has ended efforts to isolate Russia, recently held talks with President Vladimir Putin. He stated on social media that Zelenskiy is a "dictator without elections," referencing Ukraine’s martial law, which has postponed elections since 2022. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha responded, asserting that Ukraine will defend its sovereignty.
Trump's accusations intensified after Zelenskiy refuted his claim that Ukraine’s war with Russia was self-inflicted, calling it "Russian disinformation." Polls indicate Zelenskiy holds a 57% approval rating in Ukraine, contradicting Trump’s assertion of just 4%.
U.S. Vice President JD Vance cautioned Zelenskiy against publicly criticizing Trump, suggesting it could backfire. Meanwhile, European leaders, including German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, dismissed Trump’s "dictator" claim as "false and dangerous."
The situation has left European officials scrambling. French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer are set to visit Washington, seeking to reinforce support for Ukraine. Starmer defended Zelenskiy, stating it is reasonable to suspend elections during wartime.
Trump and Putin are considering a summit to negotiate a ceasefire, raising fears that Ukraine could be excluded from key talks. Russia insists trust between Washington and Moscow is essential for progress. As Europe bolsters sanctions against Russia, Zelenskiy emphasizes unity, urging allies to ensure Ukraine’s security amid shifting U.S. policies.
