U.S. President Donald Trump has publicly endorsed Colombian presidential candidate Abelardo de la Espriella ahead of Colombia’s highly anticipated runoff election scheduled for June 2026. The endorsement highlights the growing importance of U.S.-Colombia relations as voters prepare to choose between the conservative lawyer and leftist senator Ivan Cepeda.
In a social media post on Tuesday, Trump emphasized the significance of the election for both Colombia’s future and its partnership with the United States. His support comes after a closely contested first-round vote in which de la Espriella secured nearly 44% of the vote, while Cepeda received just under 41%, setting up a competitive presidential runoff.
De la Espriella, a prominent right-wing attorney with no previous experience in elected office, has gained attention for his tough stance on crime and security. His proposals include building 10 large-scale prisons and intensifying efforts against illegal armed groups and narcotics-related violence. These positions have led political observers to compare him to El Salvador President Nayib Bukele, known for his aggressive anti-crime policies.
Speaking in a video interview shared online, de la Espriella praised the role of the United States in fighting organized crime and narco-terrorism. He stated that he and Trump share common values centered on democracy, freedom, and the rule of law. He also expressed optimism about strengthening bilateral cooperation if elected president.
The endorsement drew criticism from current Colombian President Gustavo Petro, who has frequently clashed with Trump. Petro argued that foreign involvement in domestic political processes threatens national sovereignty and democratic principles. In a social media response, Petro warned that interference by one nation in another country’s political decisions undermines freedom.
As Colombia heads toward the decisive runoff election, the contest between Abelardo de la Espriella and Ivan Cepeda is expected to shape the country’s political direction, security strategy, and future relationship with the United States.
