U.S. President Donald Trump praised the Alternative for Germany (AfD) after the far-right party secured a major victory in a state election, linking its strong performance to growing dissatisfaction with Germany’s immigration policies.
Trump reacted to the election results in a Truth Social post on Tuesday, describing the AfD’s success as a significant night for Germany’s populist movement. He argued that German voters were increasingly frustrated with immigration rules and regulations that he said had harmed the country.
“Wow! The Populist Party in Germany just had a really big night,” Trump wrote, before criticizing what he called the country’s “absolutely horrible Immigration rules and regulations.”
Trump’s comments came after the AfD surged into first place in Sunday’s state election in Saxony-Anhalt. The result marked a major breakthrough for the party and could bring it closer to gaining power at the state level.
The AfD’s victory is particularly significant because a far-right party has not held state-level power in Germany since World War Two. Its rise has intensified political attention on immigration, national identity and the direction of German politics.
Immigration has remained one of the AfD’s central campaign issues, with the party advocating tighter border controls and stricter policies toward migrants. Its growing electoral support has challenged Germany’s established political parties and reshaped political debate in parts of the country.
Trump has frequently criticized European immigration policies and expressed support for political movements that favor stronger border controls and nationalist policies. His latest remarks underscore the ideological overlap between his approach to immigration in the United States and some of the positions promoted by European populist parties.
The Saxony-Anhalt election result could have broader implications for German politics as parties assess whether the AfD can translate its growing voter support into governing power. The outcome is also likely to keep immigration policy at the center of Germany’s political debate.
