Fox News footage shows a man comparing President Donald Trump’s Thursday, Oct. 29, South Carolina rally with Jonestown, Guyana, where the National Archives records 918 deaths in and near the Peoples Temple compound in 1978.
Fox News correspondent Lucas Tomlinson introduced the man only as Tom. Asked why he attended, Tom said he had been too young in the late 1970s to “get involved” and go to South America for the Jonestown Massacre. He called the rally “as close as I’ll ever get” to Jonestown and added, “There’s nothing like seeing a cult right up front, man.”
Fox described Trump’s appearance as a rally for Republican Senate candidate Darline Graham. The Federal Election Commission lists Tuesday, Nov. 3, as the next regularly scheduled federal general election.
The FBI says followers of the Rev. Jim Jones killed Congressman Leo Ryan and several companions in Guyana on Nov. 18, 1978. The FBI says Jones later ordered followers to commit mass suicide.
