US President Donald Trump said he discussed the release of political prisoners with Chinese President Xi Jinping during their meeting in Washington last week, bringing attention to cases including detained US citizen Min Zin and Hong Kong media tycoon Jimmy Lai.

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Trump confirmed that the issue came up during his talks with Xi. Asked specifically whether he raised the cases of Min Zin and Lai, Trump replied that he had.

Trump described his conversations with Xi as important and said he hoped they would prove fruitful. The comments followed Xi's visit to Washington, where the two leaders held talks amid efforts to manage US-China relations.

Before Xi's visit, the White House had indicated that Trump was expected to discuss individuals the United States considers wrongfully detained in China. It remains unclear whether the talks extended to broader human rights issues involving Tibet, Uyghurs or China's recently introduced "ethnic unity" law.

Trump has prioritized efforts to secure the freedom of Americans detained overseas, including US citizens held in China. At the same time, his administration has generally placed less public emphasis on broader criticism of Beijing's policies toward Tibetans, Uyghurs and political dissent.

Lai, the founder of the now-closed Apple Daily newspaper, remains one of the most internationally prominent figures imprisoned under Hong Kong's national security crackdown. The 78-year-old was sentenced to 20 years in prison in February after being convicted on two conspiracy counts involving collusion with foreign forces and one count related to publishing seditious material.

Min Zin, a Myanmar-born scholar and US citizen, was arrested by Chinese authorities in June while traveling to China for an academic conference. Washington subsequently designated him as wrongfully detained in August.

Trump did not announce any agreement with Xi on the detainees' release, leaving the outcome of the discussions uncertain.
