U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday condemned Russia’s actions in Ukraine as “disgusting” and warned of potential sanctions if Moscow fails to reach an agreement. Speaking from the Oval Office, Trump said he has given Russian President Vladimir Putin until August 8 to resolve the situation or face economic pressure from Washington.
Trump admitted uncertainty over whether sanctions would effectively deter Russia but emphasized the U.S. would act decisively if diplomatic efforts fail. “We are giving them an opportunity to do the right thing,” he said, signaling a final push for negotiations amid rising tensions between Moscow and Kyiv.
The warning comes as global attention remains fixed on the escalating conflict in Ukraine, which has drawn widespread international condemnation. Western nations, including key U.S. allies in Europe, have already imposed multiple rounds of sanctions targeting Russia’s financial and energy sectors. Trump’s remarks indicate Washington could intensify economic measures, potentially affecting trade, banking, and energy exports.
Analysts suggest Trump’s deadline aims to pressure Putin into concessions while reassuring U.S. allies of continued American support for Ukraine. However, uncertainty remains over Russia’s response, as previous sanctions have had limited success in altering Moscow’s behavior.
The August 8 deadline now serves as a critical moment in U.S.-Russia relations, with potential implications for global markets and security. Investors and policymakers are closely watching whether diplomatic talks progress or if new sanctions escalate tensions further.
Trump’s remarks underscore Washington’s ongoing commitment to confronting Russia’s actions in Ukraine while exploring diplomatic solutions to end the crisis.
