President Donald Trump's executive orders have disrupted healthcare funding in the U.S., forcing clinics to close and providers to lay off staff. Facilities in Virginia and West Virginia reported shutting down primary care clinics due to frozen federal funds. In California and Virginia, community health centers lost grants supporting HIV prevention and transgender healthcare.

Some funding cuts stem from Trump's orders to eliminate diversity and gender programs and recognize only two sexes. Others were linked to a recently lifted federal spending freeze. Experts warn of growing uncertainty, with providers struggling to cover payroll, rent, and medical supplies.

In Virginia, nine community health centers are operating on reserve funds, but they need financial relief soon. A clinic in southwestern Virginia remains without funding, leaving patients with no nearby healthcare options. Medicaid and some grants have resumed, but many essential services, including dental, prescription drugs, and behavioral health, remain at risk.

West Virginia’s Appalachian Center for Independent Living laid off three of five staff members after losing federal funding for over a week. Though the center regained access, only one employee returned, citing financial instability.

HIV prevention programs are also affected. St. John’s Well Child and Family Center in Los Angeles lost access to $746,000 in grant funds for transgender HIV prevention and treatment. The LGBT Life Center in Virginia faces a $6.3 million funding cut, threatening care for 400 HIV patients.

St. John’s plans to seek private funding, while California’s attorney general is challenging the cuts in court. Experts warn that defunding HIV programs will worsen health outcomes, increase costs, and strain the healthcare system. Healthcare providers demand urgent federal clarity to prevent further disruptions.
