Donald Trump begins his second term as U.S. President on Monday, marking a historic political comeback. Chief Justice John Roberts will administer the oath of office at 12 p.m. EST, with the ceremony moved indoors due to cold weather. Trump's inaugural address aims to be unifying, a shift from his 2017 “American Carnage” speech. Outgoing President Joe Biden will attend, ensuring a peaceful transfer of power.
The event has drawn notable attendees, including Argentina's President Javier Milei, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and top tech leaders Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, and Mark Zuckerberg. Despite invitations, Chinese President Xi Jinping will not attend, sending an envoy instead. Due to frigid temperatures, the traditional parade along Pennsylvania Avenue will be replaced by a celebration at the Capital One Arena.
Trump plans to enact over 200 executive actions on his first day, focusing on border security, immigration, and energy. These include classifying drug cartels as terrorist organizations, reinstating the "Remain in Mexico" policy, expanding border wall construction, and promoting fossil fuel production. Trump also pledged to pardon individuals convicted in the January 6 Capitol attack and restore TikTok's access to the U.S.
The inauguration festivities include 18 galas and a high-profile reception co-hosted by Zuckerberg and major Republican donors. Trump’s inauguration committee has raised over $170 million, surpassing the record set in 2017, with significant contributions from tech and business leaders. The official ceremony costs are taxpayer-funded, but private donations cover the other events.
Trump’s return signals significant policy shifts and global attention, emphasizing his influence in U.S. politics.
