Britain’s annual consumer price inflation rate climbed to 2.9% in July, rising from a 15-month low of 2.6% in June, according to official figures released on Wednesday. The increase highlights renewed price pressures on UK households, particularly following a sharp rise in energy costs.
The latest UK inflation rate was broadly in line with economists’ expectations. Analysts surveyed by Reuters had forecast consumer price inflation would increase to 2.9% in July, largely due to higher household energy bills.
Energy costs rose after a 13% increase in the household energy price cap set by regulator Ofgem took effect last month. The adjustment pushed up electricity and gas expenses for consumers and contributed significantly to the acceleration in overall inflation.
The July figure was slightly higher than the Bank of England’s inflation forecast. In projections published at the end of last month, the central bank had expected annual inflation to rise to 2.8%.
The increase from June’s 2.6% rate suggests that the path toward lower inflation remains uneven. While inflation had previously eased to its lowest level in 15 months, rising regulated energy prices have created fresh upward pressure on the cost of living.
Higher inflation could also remain an important factor in the Bank of England’s monetary policy decisions. Policymakers closely monitor consumer prices when determining the appropriate level of interest rates, balancing the need to control inflation with efforts to support economic growth.
For British consumers, the latest figures underline the continued impact of energy prices on household finances. Although the July inflation increase was widely anticipated by economists, the reading above the Bank of England’s forecast may reinforce concerns about how quickly inflation can sustainably return to lower levels.
With energy bills playing a major role in July’s rise, future UK consumer price inflation trends will depend partly on changes in regulated energy costs and broader price pressures across the British economy.
