Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy confirmed on Friday that Ukraine and Russia have agreed to a temporary three-day ceasefire as part of ongoing diplomatic efforts led by the United States to help end the war that has continued for more than four years. The announcement marks a significant development in attempts to reduce tensions and open the door for broader peace negotiations between the two countries.
Writing on Telegram, Zelenskiy stated that both sides also agreed to exchange 1,000 prisoners of war each, making it one of the largest prisoner swaps since the conflict began. The move is being viewed as an important humanitarian step that could help build trust between Kyiv and Moscow during sensitive negotiations.
The temporary ceasefire is expected to create a short window for diplomatic discussions and humanitarian operations. While officials have not yet released detailed terms of the agreement, international observers believe the deal could become a foundation for future peace talks if both countries follow through on their commitments.
The Russia-Ukraine war has caused widespread destruction, displaced millions of people, and increased geopolitical tensions across Europe and beyond. The United States has continued pushing for a negotiated settlement, encouraging both sides to pursue dialogue alongside military and humanitarian measures.
Analysts say the prisoner exchange agreement may signal a willingness from both Ukraine and Russia to engage in limited cooperation despite ongoing hostilities. However, experts also caution that a temporary ceasefire does not necessarily guarantee long-term peace, as major political and territorial disputes remain unresolved.
Global leaders are closely monitoring the situation, with hopes that the ceasefire and prisoner swap could reduce violence and encourage further diplomatic progress in the ongoing Ukraine-Russia conflict.
