PITTSBURGH, May 01, 2018 -- United States Steel Corporation (NYSE:X) released its Sustainability Report 2017. The report highlights the company’s renewed commitment to transparency in its sustainability efforts, including recent innovations in operations, as well as corporate responsibility practices related to environmental stewardship, safety, governance, culture and ethics and compliance.

Key takeaways from the report include:
- As a result of investments in innovation, U.S. Steel is the only American steel producer to have a third generation Advanced High Strength Steel (AHSS) approved for automotive customers. This product improves fuel mileage and helps customers meet increasing safety requirements.
- The company’s efforts to continually seek opportunities to reuse and repurpose have resulted in the annual recycling of more than 7.5 million tons of materials including 2.9 million tons of scrap steel that is used to create new steel products.
- The company announced its commitment to establish a greenhouse gas emissions reduction goal by the end of 2019.
- U.S. Steel performed approximately 89% better than its peers when compared to the serious injury cases for the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) for Iron and Steel, in 2016, the most recent year for which BLS data is available.
- The company is focused on fostering a high-performance culture characterized by accountability, fairness, respect and adherence to the highest ethical standards.
- The company's inaugural Inclusion Survey provided direct feedback on opportunities to strengthen its culture around diversity and inclusion. Future surveys will allow the company to track progress and make adjustments so that employees continue to feel valued, respected and safe.
- In 2017, U.S. Steel employees conducted more than 300,000 hours of training in areas including, but not limited to, safety, job skills and leadership.
